It's not enough to merely know what the job entails; for a deeper level of success, you need to know the who as well as the what. That's why, at Gnoêsis, we do more than just provide headcount for document reviews, contract legal, and full-time legal positions; we seek out the right people on each project. When Carol Aronowitz came on board as our new CEO in 2013, joining original founder Mary Beth Schmidt at the helm, Gnoêsis officially became a women-led business. Each woman brings her own distinct brand of know-how, intelligence, and instinct to the table as they work together to find client-based solutions that are always in alignment with their core values of integrity, passion, excellence, service, and wisdom.

Carol Aronowitz
Chief Executive Officer

When Carol Aronowitz took over as Chief Executive Officer of Gnoêsis, she brought with her the remarkable abilities of being able to see the big picture while simultaneously managing the smallest details. Although only with the company officially since 2013, Carol has been an important advisor to Gnoêsis since its inception in 2008. That, along with an extensive background in Human Resources, Administration, and Law, made Carol the ideal choice to be CEO.

Prior to coming to Gnoêsis, Carol enjoyed a successful career as a paralegal at the New York City offices of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom. Recognized by Skadden for her outstanding administrative and organizational skills, she was chosen to spearhead a program in which she recruited top talent from the country's most prestigious colleges and universities. Today, Carol brings those same skills to Gnoêsis, where she oversees financial and business operations while working closely with the entire management team to ensure the company runs like a well-oiled machine.

Carol is an active volunteer for the Parent's Association of The Columbus Academy, and has served as a Board member for BalletMet Columbus, co-chairing the Nominating and Governance Committee. She and her husband are the proud parents of three wonderful children.

Mary Beth Schmidt
President & Chief Operating Officer

Ask Mary Beth Schmidt what makes Gnoêsis different from other legal staffing and strategic consulting firms, and her answer is instantaneous: the people. Mary Beth is deeply relationship oriented, and it shows in everything she says and does. Her unique combination of business smarts and gut-level intuition enable her to excel at what she considers the "art & science" of finding the right people for the job—it all comes down to communication, innate understanding, and respect.

As one of the founders of Gnoêsis, Mary Beth is focused on getting the basics of the business right, and then doing them over and over, better and better each time. With more than 30 years of experience in the legal staffing space, she firmly believes that customer service is in her DNA, and has been essential to her lifelong success. After attending California State College in Los Angeles, Mary Beth took a position at a national firm before joining an independently owned staffing company in San Diego, where she learned to "keep the main thing the main thing." Today, as the head of business development and operations for Gnoêsis, she can be found telling the Gnoêsis story to law firms and corporate law departments across the U.S. Her loyalty to the professionals she recruits is second only to the passion she has for the business and the clients she feels privileged to serve.

When she's not singing the praises of the people she works with, Mary Beth can be found at home in Westerville enjoying the company of her husband and three amazing sons.

Daniel E. Deal
Vice President of Document Review Services

As a member of the Gnoêsis ownership team, Dan is focused on developing and growing key relationships in the marketplace. Known in the industry as both relationship focused and consultative, much of his success comes from listening more than he speaks, and putting the knowledge he gains as a result towards the best possible outcomes for Gnoêsis clients. In his role spearheading the Document Review Services Division, Dan works closely with Gnoêsis Project Managers to ensure successful client strategy and execution. Whether he's helping corporations design and implement custom document review strategies or helping law firms that are focused on gaining a competitive edge, it's a guarantee that Dan is "all-in," always remaining deeply committed to protecting and growing the relationships that differentiate Gnoêsis from others in the legal services space.

Before coming to Gnoêsis, Dan earned a B.A. in business from Western Michigan University and his J.D. from the University of Detroit School of Law. He began his career at Smith Barney, where he worked to help develop investment strategies for trust assets. He later put his relationship-building skills to work for a Michigan-based telecommunications company, where he led business development efforts and expanded the company's marketing footprint from one state to nine. He also rebuilt the Management Resources Division of Robert Half in Indianapolis and led the Employer Sales Division for a start-up technology company.

When Dan is not helping corporations and law firms design and execute cost-effective solutions for document review, he's spending time with his wife and two children--preferably outdoors. Dan is also a member of the KLTR Group Executive Network in Chicago.

Jeff Roush
Director of Project Management

Assessing the needs and expectations of clients is one of the most important parts of the project management process, and no one does it better than Jeff Roush. His ability to ask the necessary questions, listen carefully to the answers, and then design workflows and reporting to fit the project needs is critical to the success of document review work—both for one-off projects and longer-term partnerships. As Director or Project Management for Gnoêsis, Jeff shepherds each project to successful completion, identifying any potential issues early in the process, managing change as it occurs, and pinpointing opportunities to provide additional value for our clients. In addition, he conducts a post-matter assessment for each project in order to continually improve and refine the work of each team member and the quality of our service.

Jeff holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in English from the University of Toledo, and received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. He has years of experience in e-discovery and document review, including past work with two AmLaw20 firms.

Outside of work, Jeff serves on the Board of Directors for Imagine Schools, runs, and enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. He is an accomplished writer who recently published his first volume of poetry.

Brian Mizelle
Director of Human Resources & Client Services

Some people are meant to work with people. Brian Mizelle is one of those individuals. As Director of Human Resources and Client Services for The Gnoêsis Group, he oversees all HR and staffing related functions for Gnoêsis. In this role, Brian supervises and instructs our staffing coordinators to interview candidates and ascertain their interests while keeping the needs and personalities of our clients firmly in mind. Brian credits much of his ability to connect with and understand others to his previous work as a Staff Attorney at both Franklin County Children's Services and the National Youth Advocate Program. Brian believes that by combining his legal background, his work ethic, and his love of service, he is able to achieve great results—both for his clients and for Gnoêsis.

Brian has a B.S. in Business Administration with a specialization in Finance from The Ohio State University, and a J.D. from Capital University Law School. In his role at Gnoêsis, he is continuously on the lookout for great attorneys, paralegals, and legal secretaries to recruit for law firms, in-house law departments, and document review projects. He previously served on the African American Law Alumni Board at Capital University Law School, as well as the Executive Board of the John Mercer Langston Bar Association as Chair of Communications.

Joel Henry
Project Manager

Joel-Henry Mansfield has developed significant breadth and depth of experience managing the intricate details of document review projects. His holistic approach to case management begins with the big picture of our clients' litigation goals, and then tailors the specifics of each review to efficiently and effectively meet their individual needs. As Associate Project Manager for Gnoêsis, he has guided review teams to the successful conclusion of discovery in cases of nearly every type: from high-tech patent disputes to complex securities litigation. A self-described "pragmatic perfectionist," Joel-Henry believes that every new case can be a learning experience and an opportunity to improve the services we offer.

Joel-Henry earned a B.A. in Legal Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and a J.D. from U.C. Hastings in San Francisco. He has nearly a decade of document review and litigation support experience, and has worked with some of the nation's largest law firms. He is licensed in Ohio, and is an active member of the Ohio State Bar Association.

In his spare time, Joel-Henry is a performing percussionist and four-part harmony singer. He enjoys hiking and fishing, and runs an indie board-game design company with his wife.

Lucy Higgins
Staffing Coordinator - Columbus

Lucy brings a unique perspective to recruiting and staffing having held a variety of jobs in the legal field, working as both a legal secretary and legal assistant prior to becoming an attorney. Before she accepted a role on the management team, Lucy worked with The Gnoêsis Group as a document review attorney. She has both the insight and the personal experience to select the perfect candidate for any legal secretary, paralegal, and attorney position she is recruiting for.

She has an instinct when it comes to people. It is her goal to match qualified candidates with the right clients to foster long-term professional relationships. She believes that spending the time to truly get to know each candidate and to understand the specific needs of each client is paramount to successful placement.

Lucy takes pride in helping others and is committed to truly connecting, listening, and understanding.

Lucy has a B.A. in Journalism & Promotional Communication from Cleveland State University, and a J.D. from The University of Akron School of Law. She currently volunteers as a pro bono attorney with The Columbus Legal Aid Society and is a member of the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Volunteer Attorney Network.

Lisa Cogan
Direct Hire Recruiting - Project Manager

Lisa Cogan has over 20 years of legal experience as both a paralegal and litigation attorney, as well as a background in recruiting. She applies this broad experience to wear multiple hats for The Gnoêsis Group. Lisa heads up Direct Hire Recruiting for law firms and in-house law departments, and also serves as a Project Manager for document review projects. Her versatility and breadth of experience make her a tremendous asset, not only to Gnoêsis, but to the clients she serves. Lisa understands the critical importance of talent decisions in the competitive legal market; she focuses on clients' individual needs--both professional and cultural--to consistently deliver a pool of candidates with game-changing talent and the right fit for corporate legal departments and law firms alike.  Through it all, she delivers service built on the core concepts of helping others and always doing the right thing.

Lisa earned her Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies from University of Cincinnati, her Bachelor of Arts from Xavier University and her JD from Salmon P. Chase College of Law.  She has active law licenses in New Jersey and Kentucky.  Outside of her client service roles, she enjoys reading, golf, competitive bocce, and spending time with her family.

Krista Brueggemann
Manager of Operations - Indianapolis

Krista serves as the Manager of Operations for Gnoêsis’ Indianapolis office. She works closely and effectively with our clients to create teams of professionals who are both proficient in document review and sensitive to customer care. Further, she maintains excellent communication with recruiting resources to ensure that we continue to identify the best legal candidates for document review and legal staffing.

Prior to joining Gnoêsis, Krista developed extensive experience as a paralegal and a manager. This background helps her identify the optimal staffing solutions for our clients. Krista takes the time to understand each client’s unique situation and needs. This allows her to tailor the best possible team of legal professionals for that individual client.

Krista majored in English and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Ball State University. She also received her paralegal certification from IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis). She has experience as a legal secretary, legal assistant, and paralegal in a variety of fields. Krista takes pride in her personal and professional relationships. Krista understands that the quality of our team members, clients, and staff are instrumental in the success of Gnoêsis, but the personal, human relationships we have are paramount.

David M. Aronowitz

David Aronowitz is a born strategist. Whether working on complex legal problems, negotiating transactions, reviewing business plans or mapping long term approaches to deflect problems, Dave always sees the big picture and connects the dots that others don’t even see. One of the original founders of The Gnoêsis Group, David decided—after serving as President and CEO of the company for six years—to return to what he does best: providing his thoughtful, creative, and innovative counsel to law firms and corporate law departments looking to solve problems and reduce costs.

David graduated with honors from Haverford College before obtaining his J.D. from Yale Law School. After law school, he served as a litigation associate in the New York office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He then embarked on a successful career as an in-house attorney, which culminated at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company from 1998 to 2007, where he served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary from 2001 to 2007. While at Scotts, David was responsible for the company's environmental, health, safety and security functions, as well as the company's corporate compliance, government relations and community relations functions. He defended Scotts in four separate antitrust actions and successfully prosecuted numerous cases in state and federal courts, as well as before the International Chamber of Commerce, saving hundreds of millions of dollars in damages and netting nearly one hundred million dollars in awards and settlements.

When not providing his insightful counsel to clients of The Gnoêsis Group, David serves on the boards of Glimcher Realty Trust, The Wexner Center for the Arts and The Center for Family Safety and Healing.. He was a Board member at Nationwide Children's Hospital for nine years, five of which he served as Vice Chairman of the Quality Committee. He has also served on the Boards of Franklin Park Conservatory, The Homeless Families Foundation, and The Columbus Academy.
